Maam Cross railway station on the erstwhile Galway to Clifden branch of the former Midland Great Western Railway of Ireland is set to see trains again after over eighty years of disuse. The derelict station standing on 8.5 acres has been acquired by a not for profit company limited by guarantee – MGWR (2017) DAC with a view to its restoration in the Connemara wilderness. The Promoters vision is to recreate a snapshot of the west of Ireland country railway, complete with track and heritage trains – a working railway experience, drawing on early to mid-twentieth century themes of emigration, conflict, rural life, and of course ‘The Quiet Man’ which was filmed in the surrounding savage beauty of Connemara. Maam Cross station opened in July 1895 to serve the vast hinterland of the Maam Valley and Joyce Country to the North, and Carna, Rosmuc, in South Connemara. The Clifden extension , of which it was one of the intermediate stations, was one of what were known as the Balfour Lines – built with government assistance to open up the remote far west of Ireland and stimulate economic activity – in the so called ‘Congested Districts’. Since opening in 1991, we have prided ourselves on using the best local produce. Most of our fish is locally sourced and is brought to our doorstep by the local fishermen on a daily basis. Even though our speciality is seafood we have plenty of other options from meat to vegetarian dishes. We can seat up to 75 people in our restaurant and we are recommended by all the major food guides including Georgina Campbell and the Bridgestone Guide, and we have been members of the prestigious BIM Seafood Circle for the past number of years.

Walsh’s Bakery on Market Street in Clifden, Co. Galway is nearly 60 years in business. Started by Tom Walsh, originally from Headford, Co. Galway, in 1953, it is now owned and operated by his son, Cathal and wife Joan.Walsh’s Bakery was founded in 1953 by Tom Walsh. He married his wife, Una, soon thereafter. Their seven children grew up helping in the bakery and shop. The Walsh family baking tradition is now carried on by their son, Cathal, with his wife, Joan, and daughter, Róisín. Celebratory opening of Derrigimlagh Discovery Point – September 2016 September 16th 2016 saw the celebratory opening of the Derrigimlagh Discovery Point known locally as the ‘Marconi Site’. A guided walk was given by archaeologist Michael Gibbons and engineer Shane Joyce. With over 300 in attendance and favorable weather, the 3 hour guided was great success. These issues pertained to major blocks on the future of Connemara’s economic development. The meeting lasted two hours and was well attended by local Councillors, TDs, and Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton. (i) LOCALS CAN NO LONGER RENT, BUY OR BUILD A HOME IN CONNEMARA It is now a fact that locals can no longer Rent, Buy or Rent a home in Connemara. The chamber outlined in detailed presentation how there are at present just 2 rental properties available to rent and just four 3-bedroom family homes to buy at the €300,000 mark in Connemara. But the plight of refusals of residential planning permissions took a large chunk of the meeting as the Chamber outlined five recent residential planning refusal stories and how it affects the lives of the individuals involved and the impact on the vibrancy of any area.
