Information on Plean Gaeilge don Chlochán / Irish Language Plan for Clifden
25 January 2023
A Chara Clifden has been given official state recognition as a Gaeltacht Service Town and an effective language plan will now be developed to promote Irish throughout the whole community. You and/or your organisation can have your voices heard and be part of this exciting plan by taking a few minutes to answer the attached questionnaire. This survey will provide us with accurate information on how Irish is currently used in our community and how we can expand and develop it in the future. In order to contact as many people as possible, and if you are your organisations contact, could you forward to your data base and ask that they complete and return the survey also. Your participation in shaping this plan would be greatly appreciated. Should you have any queries and to forward completed questionnaires please email: [email protected] We would also like to invite you and any groups you may be linked with to join in a Stakeholders Zoom call to discuss how the plan can proceed. 2 Major New Extensions of the Connemara Greenway now firmly on the Cards
4 April 2022
Connemara Chamber of Commerce welcomes the recent announcement (December 2021) and allocation of €3,050,000 towards the development of the Connemara Greenway. Connemara Greenway funding announced by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII): Clifden to Recess: €1,900,000 Derrigimlagh – Clifden – Kylemore Abbey: €550,000 Galway to Moycullen: €600,000 The Chamber has for many years focused on getting a safe off-road walking and cycling path from Clifden to The Signature Discovery Point at the Marconi radio station at Derrigimlagh. The Marconi Station itself now receives over 30,000 (visitors and locals alike) per annum – all mainly by car. The recent allocation of €550,000 for this Connemara Greenway extension will bring even more visitors but by foot and bike. The support of landowners has been invaluable in providing access to their property that allowed us to identify a satisfactory solution and following lengthy discussions, an in principle agreement has been reached with the National Parks and Wildlife Service to permit the development that will involve a raised boardwalk on a special area of conservation. We have concluded environmental assessments and are awaiting a pre planning meeting with Galway County Council before submitting a planning application. We would like to thank all of the landowners for their support […]

Car Parking in Clifden
5 July 2021
In April the Chamber wrote to a number of parties asking them to assist with the car parking during the summer months. We are pleased to report that Super Valu in Clifden are assisting the Chamber by providing a number or spaces on level minus 3 to the business owners and staff of the town to park their cars and therefore freeing up valuable car parking spaces for people visiting the town on business or leisure. Clifden District and Community Council have also agreed to make the area on the beach road formally known as the ball alley available subject to planning and insurance. Car parking spaces are also available at the mart. Basic research shows us that most of the cars parked on street belong to business owners and staff. If business owners and staff park elsewhere it frees up the spaces for people patronising the businesses in the town.

The Future of Cleggan and Inishbofin Airstrips – Our Thoughts
19 May 2017
Connemara Chamber of Commerce’s submission to The Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs on the future of Cleggan and Inishbofin Airstrips and Surrounding Sites The Dept of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs recently asked for public submissions on the future of the Cleggan and Inishbofin airstrips. The Chamber made the following submissions in regard to the future of both airstrips: Keep the airstrips ‘as airstrips’ and in public ownership – given the considerable investment by the State of €9 million, we ask that the airstrips be kept as airstrips and be retained in state ownership with a view to providing an air service at Cleggan and Inishbofin. Installing a major regional coastguard station at this site along with providing commercial flights (or a private aerodrome) represents a much better long term social and financial return on investment to the State but especially the people of the area. Low Cost Air Services from Inverin to Cleggan and Inishbofin – we believe it would worth considering (on a trial basis) providing some air services from Inverin to Cleggan and Inishbofin to establish what the demand would be and the viability of future services. […]
Invited Waterford Greenway delegation visits Connemara
3 May 2017
Waterford Greenway Delegation show how it can be done The Connemara Greenway Alliance invited a delegation from the successful Waterford Greenway campaign group to meet with Galway County and City Councillors and Officials last week and push forward the completion of the Connemara Greenway from Galway City to Clifden by 2020. In 2014, €2 million in funding was secured for the Moycullen section of the Connemara Greenway, with the Waterford and Kerry greenways also securing funding from the Department of Transport. Of the three, the Waterford Greenway is the only greenway completed to date, officially opening in March this year. According to Garvan Cummins of the Deise Greenway Group: ‘’ This has been a game changer for the people that live along the route. Neighbours that usually only pass each other in their cars are stopping to talk to each other on the Greenway. People who have not cycled in 60 years are now cycling again. Teenagers actually think it’s cool to cycle along the Greenway!’’ ‘’Taking one area as an example. Nothing short of an economic miracle has happened in the town of Kilmacthomas. Before the Greenway, it was very depressed with many closed shops. One new cafe that […]

Marconi Holiday Winner Announced
9 January 2017
Congratulations to Martina Stropnik from Austria The draw which took place at the Abbeyglen Castle Hotel on Monday the 19th December 2016 at the annual Lotto Christmas Party. She has won a Holiday for two in Ballynahinch Castle Hotel, Lough Inagh Hotel and Abbeyglen Castle Hotel aswell as €1000 spending money. This was a Marconi Looped Walk Community Project organised by the Connemara Chamber of Commerce where much needed funding for the upkeep of this historic site. Guglielmo Marconi caused a communications sensation when he transmitted wireless messages from his station at Poldhu in Cornwall to Newfoundland on 12th December 1901. Having received a grant of $80,000 from the Canadian Government to build a station at Glace Bay in Nova Scotia, he commenced the task of perfecting wireless communication with Poldhu from late 1902. He experienced extreme difficulty in providing commercially viable communications and decided to move his easterly station as far west as possible and decided on Clifden (Derrigimlagh) after making tests at a number of sites. The station was not officially opened until 17th October 1907, when commercial signalling commenced between Clifden and Glace Bay. It was a sight to behold, with the huge condenser house building, the power […]
